About Lost Species Education Illustrations

The three information graphics serve as a basis to introduce the topic of the Lazarus-Effect. They include "The Six Major Mass Extinctions", "Death Watch of the Species", as well as an information graphic of the "Local Fern Plants and Flowering Plants" (based on the Rote Liste, 2018). The Lazarus Effect is based on the theme of the Lazarus-Effect, as coined by paleontologist David Jablonski. This pertains to the unintentional rediscovery (by accident, through expedition or through relocation projects) of a previously lost or considered extinct form of life.

Design Challenge
The hardest part was it to visually compress the complex topic informations of extinction from the anthropological, biological and paleontological side into an understandable graphic. The infographics are a part of the Lazarus Effect-Campaign, special attention is paid to the complementary interaction.
The subject deals with the death and (mass) extinction. The black and white style in detail and the rich contrasted illustrations are the best way of visualization and communication for this serious topic.
Research
Research with anthropological, biological and paleontological literature, as well as support of various natural history museums.
The design is rich in detail. They are drawn as vector graphics in black and white and thus fits in well with most of the musee's scenographic installations.

The graphics are structured in such a way that the viewer can discover more and more. All thre infographics are in a large-format and understandable for everyone. The Topics are compressed and build on on each other.
Inspiration
To educate about the extinction history and to promote the idea of sustainability among the general public, with emphases that extinction can be reversed, and to raise awareness of positive and negative human in uences on Nature. They are a part of the LazarusEffect campaign.
