About Outsiders Lighting Performance

It is a lighting show that was staged at three different locations in Oakville (ON, Canada). The performance is fiction on the theme of Energy. In the story, the Outsiders came to Earth not as invaders but as highly intelligent creatures with a lot of knowledge to share with humans. The main point of the project: the energy is actually found inside of us. It is the foundation of human livelihood and maybe a key to solving the energy problem on Earth. To visualize the idea, the artist has designed lighting costumes using LED modules and zip-ties.

Unique Properties
"Outsiders: energy is inside" is a lighting performance that was staged in Oakville, Canada. The performance is a fiction on the theme of Energy, particularly, how and what kind of energy inhabitants of other planets use to survive. To visualize this idea, we have designed lighting costumes masking human bodies and helping transform them into illuminated aliens. The main point of the project: the energy is actually found inside of us. It is the foundation of our livelihood and may be a key to solving the energy problem on Earth.

Production Technology
Materials used in the project:
116 of LED modules (IP-SF),
5,000 red zip-ties,
20 meters of wire,
a portable power station
Research
Uniqueness and water for nice reflections were our main requirements for the performance location. After some google research and scouting, we have chosen several places in Oakville. The largest of three performances took place in the Lions Park Valley (Oakville).
Inspiration
The idea of the performance started growing after one of our previous lighting projects. We continued experimenting with led lights and zip-ties. In the first stage, it resembled a caterpillar shining in a dark. After some modifications, we came up with the idea of making a costume for aliens. It was the good starting point but we lacked an idea to make future project looks more alive and attractive. So, we decided to play around with the most actual problem on Earth, the problem of energy. Thus, were born our aliens who came on Earth to share their experience of using energy. We named them Outsiders.
In our story, Outsiders came to Earth not as invaders but as highly intelligent creatures with a lot of knowledge to share with humans. As just arrived, they are exploring our planet at different locations illuminating surroundings with their lights.
Project Duration
The performance was staged in Oakville (Ontario, Canada) in May 2016.
