About House in Niigata Residential Building

House in Niigata is a private house designed for a family of four in an old and densely built residential area. The outer walls are made of wooden material lightly colored in gray, so the building harmonizes with the surrounding streets. The plan is organized around two gardens. A courtyard enclosed by a concrete wall is placed on the ground floor, and a roof terrace framed by a wooden lattice is placed on the second floor. All rooms face these two gardens, so screening such as curtains is not needed. Traditional wooden construction was used.

Design Challenge
Many of the old residential areas are densely populated.
The impact of architecture on the cityscape is great.
I created a good cityscape and thought of a house where you can feel nature.
Research
We built a courtyard and a roof terrace, and thought about balancing the contradictions of openness and privacy.
We have verified how to take in light and wind many times.
Therefore, we have realized openness and a private space.
Inspiration
Many houses are lined up in old residential areas in urban areas.
The surrounding houses are all built at the same time.
The exterior is made of similar industrial material.
In an old residential area, I wanted to change the uniform cityscape while cooperating with the cityscape.
Even in a residential area in an urban area, I thought of a house that feels nature.
Project Duration
Construction started in 2017 in Niigata, Japan. Completed in 2018.
Operation Flow
On the first floor, we created a courtyard surrounded by a concrete wall.
On the second floor, we made a roof terrace and surrounded it with a wooden lattice and an outer wall.
All the rooms have been placed in these two gardens.
The garden creates a private space.
There is no need for blindfolds such as curtains.
The connection with the outside will be strengthened positively.
I thought that feeling nature in everyday life was an open house.
