About Rouzan Residential Building

Rouzan is a residential building in Isfahan, Iran. The design brings together a traditional Iranian house and a modern apartment. The facade is made of bricks produced from local materials, aligned vertically with concave sections and sharp angles. Semi-transparent bricks and wooden canopies with decorative niches and cavities recall traditional Iranian homes. The rooftop holds a water fountain, a garden and a barbecue area. Electrical rotating canopy windows are controlled remotely, expanding to admit more sunlight in winter and contracting to limit heat in summer.

Production Technology
The facade was designed utilizing bricks made of indigenous materials with an intricate brick design format synchronized with the signature electrical canopy window designs. The bricks were aligned vertically with concave sections including sharp angles to guide audiences vision upward; the overall facade texture corresponded to the dominant texture of the region as well. Intricate brick designs were also continued in the interior facade, entrance, wooden door, and staircase designs with angled format to create a modernized look for the entire project.
Design Challenge
Designing the signature canopy windows to be efficient and to increase privacy of the residences, meeting logistical guidelines, and finally achieving clients investment budget were among the most difficult challenges to overcome. On one hand, guidelines restricted the building height, the facade design, and rooftop water fountain; on the other hand, material selections were limited due to the clients low budget. Nonetheless, the design had to be appealing for prospective buyers.
Research
Distinct angles of illumination patterns for openings in the facade, canopy windows, the building entrance as well as analysis of solar energy absorption utilizing empirical formulas and simulator software according to the climate of Isfahan city were among major researches for this project.
Inspiration
Client asked to realize her childhood home memory combined with advanced architectural designs. Her childhood home was a traditional Iranian house with a fountain centering the yard surrounded by gardens; different rooms circularly faced the fountain providing a sense of inclusion; each room had a wooden framed window made of smaller identical windows producing symmetrical shapes once sunlight passing through. The inspiration was to create a signature canopy window pattern designs derived from her childhood memory by implementing the signature designs onto key compartments of the building.
Project Duration
The project design and building execution started in November 2016 in Isfahan and finished in January 2019.
Operation Flow
This building is in Isfahan, Iran where its climate is hot and dry in summer and cold and dry in winter. Considering the requested traditional designs, a trade-off solution had to achieve so that the building absorbed the least possible heat during the summer and the most sunlight absorption in the winter. Thus, the electrical rotating canopy windows were created which could be remotely controlled to expand in order to maximize the sunlight entry in the winter and to contract in order to minimize it in the summer.
