About Zhen Yuan Zeng Baijiu Packaging

Zhen Yuan Zeng is a packaging design for an aged baijiu, a traditional Chinese spirit. The bottle is made of ceramic and shaped as a modern version of the traditional liquor jar. Precise geometric facets refine the classic form and reduce its visual weight. The rippled cap refers to the slow aging of the liquor inside the jar. The bottle is wrapped in sulphate paper, which softens the outline and partly conceals the form. The paper is peeled away by the consumer, so the bottle is revealed step by step. The package measures 85 by 85 by 165 millimeters.

Design Details

Unique Properties
With a legacy spanning over five centuries, this product stands as a benchmark for aged baijiu. Its bottle design is deeply rooted in the ancient form of the traditional liquor jar, yet reimagined for the contemporary era—refining the classic through modern design language to achieve a living heritage that connects historical symbolism with contemporary artistry.
Inspiration
The bottle design reinterprets the traditional liquor jar through a contemporary lens. Its precise geometric facets refine the original form, alleviating its visual weight and imparting a modern structure. The rippled cap symbolizes the dynamic aging process of the liquor within the jar, while the tracing paper wrapping the body creates subtle visual softness—striking a balance between concealment and revelation to evoke a sense of discovery and immersive appeal.
Research
Through on-site research, we collected a detailed market report from over 300 consumers and key distributors.
Challenge
The key challenge of this project lay in visually communicating the concept of aged liquor in an immediately understandable way for consumers. This was ultimately resolved by adopting the conceptual framework of the traditional liquor jar.
Realization and Technology
The bottle is made of ceramic and wrapped in sulphate paper on the outside.
Operation and Interaction
The bottle's surface is covered with sulphate paper, allowing consumers to gradually unveil the mystery of the aged spirit as they peel away the packaging.
